Quote "Not all shamans use intoxication with plants to obtain ecstasy, but all shamanic practice aims to give rise to ecstasy. Drumming, manipulation of breath, ordeals, fasting, theatrical illusions, sexual abstinence-all are time honored methods for entering into the trance necessary for shamanic work. Yet none of these methods is as effective, as ancient, and as overwhelming as the use of plants containing chemical compounds that produce visions." Terence Mckenna

Quote "If someone who can't swim falls into the ocean, that person will grasp at the water and sink like a rock. A good swimmer who has trained knows how to relax and become one with the vast ocean. Learning how to swim takes practice, and it helps to have some guidance as we begin. it is the same way with our minds." Tulku Thondup

Fact
Peace of mind, serenity, and calmness are descriptions of a disposition free from the effects of stress. In some cultures, inner peace is considered a state of consciousness or enlightenment that may be cultivated by various forms of training, such as prayer, meditation, T'ai Chi Ch'uan or yoga, for example. Many spiritual practices refer to this peace as an experience of knowing oneself. Finding inner peace is often associated with traditions such as Buddhism and Hinduism.

In about 1906 the first hard rubber balls were produced, such as the Brunswick "Mineralite" ball, and these remained the standard until the 1960s and 70s. These decades saw the emergence of plastic (polyester) balls.

Dit Da Jow Recipe - helps heal swollen, bruised areas, and arthritis

Jow recipe:
  • Arnica blossoms (anti-inflamatory, pain relief)
  • Comfrey (anti-inflamatory, pain relief)
  • Blessed Thistle (blood purifier)
  • Goldenseal root (antibiotic, wound healing)
  • Ginger root (circulation, wound healing, pain relief)
  • Myrrh (antiseptic, circulation, wound healing)
  • Sasparilla root (blood purifier)
  • Witch Hazel (anti-inflamatory, pain relief)
Use equal proportions of all the items listed, by weight. You can meaure them out on a small kitchen scale. Grind the herbs in a mortar & pestle (or electric grinder) and place them in a glass jar. Add 80 or 90 proof grain alcohol (I use vodka); use 4 ounces of dried herbs to one pint of alcohol base (or equivalent proportions). Seal the jar tightly. Allow the infusion to work for two weeks; once or twice a day, swirl the liquid gently through the herbal mash. After two weeks, strain off the liquid and discard the herbal residue; pour into smaller glass containers.
This tincture can be applied as is to swollen or bruised areas, or can be mixed with a thickener (like lanolin or safflower oil) and a hardener (like beeswax) to make an ointment. This formulation has also been effective in the treatment of arthritis, for pain relief and restoration of range of motion.

Reusing or Upcycling Polystyrene (which is often mistaken for Styrofoam) Containers

Resin Identification Code 6: Polystyrene
Going out to eat is lovely, especially when you end up with leftovers for the next day's meal, but nothing frustrates me more than receiving a polystyrene container to house my meal for only a day or so. Commonly mistaken for styrofoam, polystyrene does not biodegrade for hundreds of years and is resistant to photolysis.[1]
In fact, polystyrene foam is a major component of plastic debris in the ocean, where it becomes toxic to marine life. Foamed polystyrene blows in the wind and floats on water, and is abundant in the outdoor environment.[2]

Have you received one of these containers?
Thoroughly clean it and reuse it; a number of ideas can be found below, or let us know how you put the pesky polystyrene to use!
  • Reuse containers for soup or ice cream as measuring cups.
  • Food storage for leftovers in the fridge or bringing a lunch.
  • Craft, art, or hobby storage
  • Paint trays
  • Decorate and use to house a gift.
  • Indoor compost container
  • Insulation behind switch plates or walls
  • Cut up and use as a fill for bean bags or pet beds.
  • Cut up and use as a filler in the bottom of a plant's pot.
  • Seed germinating trays, just poke a few holes in the bottom for drainage.
  • Shred and use as packing peanuts for mailing, storage, or moving.
  • Shape and use as a stamp.
  • Create weather-proof decorations.
  • Cut to size and use as plant markers.

Homemade Ginger Ale (Contains Alcohol)

You'll need:
--1c sugar (or less)
--Champagne yeast
--small piece of ginger root
--a lemon
--a grater (microplane or fine holes) or food processor/chopper
--an empty 2L plastic (important) bottle
--around 2L of fresh water

Peel and finely grate a small piece of ginger. How much is up to you; it depends on how strong you want the final ginger ale to be. Try 1T or so in the beginning, and if you want it stronger, add another half tablespoon; weaker, add less.

Add a full lemon's worth of juice to this. If, like me, you don't have a juicer, roll the lemon between your hand and a hard surface a few times; this will help you get the juice out more quickly once it's cut.

To the empty 2L bottle, add:
--1c sugar (Again, taste comes into play. I like it less sweet, so I add ~ 3/4c. You may wish to add more or less depending on your personal taste. Add a full cup the first time you make it, and go from there).
--1/4 tsp yeast
--lemon juice
--grated ginger

Fill your 2L bottle to an inch or two below the top with fresh water. Screw the cap on tightly, and shake until everything is dispersed. Be certain to flush the sugar from the nooks at the bottom of the bottle.

Once you're finished, place the bottle in a warm-ish place (fridge, towards the back) and let it steep. Check on it every few hours by squeezing the bottle. When you can no longer push in on the bottle (i.e., it's become pressurized), take the bottle and put it in the fridge. This will slow down the fermentation and keep things from exploding. It never takes more than a day or so, but depending on how you vary the ingredients, things may take a little longer.
