Dit Da Jow Recipe - helps heal swollen, bruised areas, and arthritis

Jow recipe:
  • Arnica blossoms (anti-inflamatory, pain relief)
  • Comfrey (anti-inflamatory, pain relief)
  • Blessed Thistle (blood purifier)
  • Goldenseal root (antibiotic, wound healing)
  • Ginger root (circulation, wound healing, pain relief)
  • Myrrh (antiseptic, circulation, wound healing)
  • Sasparilla root (blood purifier)
  • Witch Hazel (anti-inflamatory, pain relief)
Use equal proportions of all the items listed, by weight. You can meaure them out on a small kitchen scale. Grind the herbs in a mortar & pestle (or electric grinder) and place them in a glass jar. Add 80 or 90 proof grain alcohol (I use vodka); use 4 ounces of dried herbs to one pint of alcohol base (or equivalent proportions). Seal the jar tightly. Allow the infusion to work for two weeks; once or twice a day, swirl the liquid gently through the herbal mash. After two weeks, strain off the liquid and discard the herbal residue; pour into smaller glass containers.
This tincture can be applied as is to swollen or bruised areas, or can be mixed with a thickener (like lanolin or safflower oil) and a hardener (like beeswax) to make an ointment. This formulation has also been effective in the treatment of arthritis, for pain relief and restoration of range of motion.

Homemade Ginger Ale (Contains Alcohol)

You'll need:
--1c sugar (or less)
--Champagne yeast
--small piece of ginger root
--a lemon
--a grater (microplane or fine holes) or food processor/chopper
--an empty 2L plastic (important) bottle
--around 2L of fresh water

Peel and finely grate a small piece of ginger. How much is up to you; it depends on how strong you want the final ginger ale to be. Try 1T or so in the beginning, and if you want it stronger, add another half tablespoon; weaker, add less.

Add a full lemon's worth of juice to this. If, like me, you don't have a juicer, roll the lemon between your hand and a hard surface a few times; this will help you get the juice out more quickly once it's cut.

To the empty 2L bottle, add:
--1c sugar (Again, taste comes into play. I like it less sweet, so I add ~ 3/4c. You may wish to add more or less depending on your personal taste. Add a full cup the first time you make it, and go from there).
--1/4 tsp yeast
--lemon juice
--grated ginger

Fill your 2L bottle to an inch or two below the top with fresh water. Screw the cap on tightly, and shake until everything is dispersed. Be certain to flush the sugar from the nooks at the bottom of the bottle.

Once you're finished, place the bottle in a warm-ish place (fridge, towards the back) and let it steep. Check on it every few hours by squeezing the bottle. When you can no longer push in on the bottle (i.e., it's become pressurized), take the bottle and put it in the fridge. This will slow down the fermentation and keep things from exploding. It never takes more than a day or so, but depending on how you vary the ingredients, things may take a little longer.

Revisiting: Two Ingredient Ice Cream - No Machine Required

Two (or, possibly three) Ingredient Ice Cream

Prep: 10 minutes Freeze: 6 hours
        Ingredients:
        1/2 cup of honey
        2 1/2 cups of cream (35% fat)

Alterations: Add a teaspoon of vanilla (to the whipped cream portion) & just a tiny bit of grated vanilla bean (to the honey and cream portion) for a boost of flavor.

        Directions:
        1. Whip 1.5 cups of whipping cream (plus 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, if desired) until it forms stiff peaks, refrigerate.

        2. Heat honey on low heat until it is very runny and add the remaining 1 cup of cream. Stir together until well blended (and grate in a tiny bit of vanilla bean, if you like). Allow to cool to room temperature.

        3. Add cooled honey/cream mixture to the whipped cream. Whisk until well blended.

        4. Freeze approximately 6 hours until the mixture is the consistency of ice cream. If time permits, periodically whisk the mixture during freezing to produce a creamier texture.
Serve with the topping of your choice & enjoy!

        Making progress, keep whipping

Add 1.5 cups cream, note texture pre-whipping

        There's our peaks...refrigerate
        Warm honey on low
Mix in remaining cup of cream

Pitch (add) cooled honey mixture to whipped cream.

Here's what happens if the mixture is added when warm (it still tasted yummy!)
        Whisk well
For a creamier texture, whisk periodically throughout the 6 hour freeze.

Revisiting: 100 Percent Whole Wheat Sandwich Bread Recipe

Has your wheat bread been too hearty? Perhaps a little dry and not quite as soft as you'd hoped? Try sifting the flour, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Just look at the difference... (A loaf that was prepared with non-sifted flour can be found at the end of this post.)

        Whole Wheat Bread- Sifted Flour

100 Percent Whole Wheat Sandwich Bread
Makes three 1 1/2 pound loaves

        Ingredients
        • 1 1/2 tablespoons of granulated yeast (1 1/2 packets)
        • 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon salt
        • 1/2 cup honey
        • 5 tablespoons, plus extra for greasing pan, oil (of neutral flavor)
        • 1 1/2 cups lukewarm water
        • 1 1/2 cups lukewarm milk
        • 6 2/3 cups whole wheat flour, sifted

          Directions

Mix the yeast, salt, honey, oil, milk and water in a large bowl (at least 5 quarts.)
          Mix in the flour.
Cover loosely and allow to rest at room temperature for 2 to 3 hours (until the dough rises and collapses.)
The dough can be used immediately after the initial rise, though it is easier to maneuver when cold. Refrigerate in a lidded (but not airtight) container and use over the next several days.

On baking day, lightly grease a 9x4x3 inch loaf pan.
With wet hands, gather about a cantaloupe sized portion of dough.
Quickly shape the dough into a ball by gently  stretching the surface of the dough around to the bottom on 4 sides, rotating the ball a  quarter turn after your fold so that the bottom forms four bunched ends.
Drop the loaf into your prepared pan,
it should be just over half full.
Allow the dough to rest for 40 minutes.

Flour the top and slash with the tip of a serrated bread knife.

Ten minutes before baking, preheat the oven to 350F and place an empty boiler tray on the bottom shelf.

Set the loaf pan in the center of the oven.
Quickly pour 1 cup of (at least) warm water into the boiler tray and immediately close the door. (You'll hear some neat fizzling, but no worries.)
Bake for 50 to 60 minutes until deeply browned and firm.
Allow the loaf to cool completely before slicing.

          Homemade Tortillas

          Homemade Tortillas
The original recipe yields 24 tortillas. Preferring a larger tortilla, I made 12.

          Ingredients
          • 4 cups all-purpose flour
          • 1 teaspoon salt
          • 2 teaspoons baking powder
          • 2 tablespoons butter
          • 1 1/2 cups water
            24 equal pieces

            Directions

Whisk the flour, salt, and baking powder together in a large mixing bowl.
Mix in the butter with your fingers until the flour resembles cornmeal.
Add the water and mix until the dough comes together; place on a lightly floured surface and knead a few minutes until smooth and elastic.
Divide the dough into 24 equal pieces, enough to fill your closed fist, and roll each piece into a ball. (Or double the ball of dough for 12 larger tortillas.)

            makes 24 tortillas

Preheat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Use a well-floured rolling pin to roll a dough ball into a thin, round tortilla.

Place into the hot skillet, and cook until bubbly and golden; flip and continue cooking until golden on the other side.

Place the cooked tortilla in a tortilla warmer; continue rolling and cooking the remaining dough.
Mmm, homemade quesadillas! After I chose to half the yield to 12.

Homemade Laundry Detergent - Hypoallergenic, Effective, and Saves You Money

Homemade laundry detergent is safe, effective, easy to make, efficient, and cheaper than your alternatives. I admit I was skeptical when I came across Matt Jabs' recipe for Homemade Laundry Detergent on DIY Natural. But with a tag line of "Save Money... Increase Freedom" who wouldn't want to give his recipes a go? Plus, he was kind enough to share his personal cost breakdown which came to a savings of $.16/load! My personal savings were greater, but I did not save my receipts or calculations. (Perhaps next time, or why not share your own?) Note, this detergent is safe for front loading and top loading washers as well as High-Efficiency washing machines.

          Homemade Laundry Detergent Recipe:
1 Bar of Soap* (free of dyes & perfumes)
               1 Cup of Borax
               1 Cup of Washing Soda
*I chose Dove® sensitive skin/unscented body soap simply because I had it. What do you have on hand?

          Tools
                Cheese Grater
                Container for Detergent
                1 Tablespoon

          Directions
Using your cheese grater, shred the entire bar of soap into the container of your choice.

Combine the cup of Borax and the cup of Washing Soda with the shredded soap.

Stir for several minutes until thoroughly mixed.

Lastly, toss a full load of soiled laundry into your washer followed by 1 Tablespoon of your freshly made laundry detergent.

And just in case you have any doubts, here's my original review...
"My family consists of several dogs and birds which when combined with our choice to refrain from using paper towels creates heavily soiled laundry. Thus, the ultimate test ensued. One SUPER soiled load of laundry and 1 tablespoon of your laundry detergent. The outcome was remarkable; I stuck my nose atop the freshly spun towels and to my surprise smelled clean linen! I will fall asleep tonight to the tumbling of my dryer and sleep peacefully knowing the environment and my wallet have been minimally impacted."
          Happy Laundering!

Merry Xmas Eve, Eve and Fall Vegetable Risotto with Blue Cheese

"Merry Xmas Eve, Eve!" was what I awoke to at 6:20 in the morning. The host on National Public Radio proclaimed amongst Xmas songs.  Now don't get too excited, the only reason I set my radio to that station is because I appreciate the Jazz music as an alarm. Nevertheless, the greeting brought a smile to my face...who knew I wasn't the only one who thought today was worth celebrating!

After about thirty minutes of tossing and turning and groanings from my boyfriend, I rolled out of bed to welcome the day with some Hatha Yoga Groundwork complements of Yoga Yak. If you are interested, you can find their videos here for free on their Youtube channel and here for purchase from their website. I am a beginner, but the benefits from just a few classes have been remarkable. My mind is focused and free of anxiety and worry. After each class I welcome the tinge of tightness, I find comfort in knowing my body is stretching its limits.  Be sure to drink a glass of neutral temperature water just prior to and immediately following your practice, its quite beneficial.

And... on to the Fall Vegetable Risotto with Blue Cheese. Sure there was more to my day, but who wants to hear about office work, any way?

It's about 4 in the afternoon and the sun is setting.  I am opening a bottle of dry white wine, partially because I need it for the risotto and mainly because I am ready for a glass. As I dice the onion, Capone, our 7 year old Boxer eagerly takes his seat beside the cutting board cart.  His eyes twitching with anticipation after each swift move of my bread knife. (Yes, I said bread knife.) I was dicing my lovely organic white onion, which was grown in some foreign country, with a bread knife as it was the sharpest clean knife I own. It worked well, but I need to invest in some quality knifes. When I finally miscalculated a dice, Capone happily devoured the bit of onion.  Animals are such wonderful creatures; they find peace and happiness in every moment as we all should.  (Note: I have since learned that onions are not appropriate for dogs.)

Once all the ingredients for the risotto were prepared I tossed on the first Home Alone and started cooking.  What better way to celebrate Xmas Eve, Eve than with a classic holiday film.  That coupled with the wine is why I didn't take too many photos of the prep work and cooking, but here is how mine turned out

I found a small bowl to be full of flavor and quite filling.  It really brought some warmth to such a chilly, wintry evening. You couldn't even tell that my brussel sprouts were frozen or that I added a cup of water to the broth as I only had 4 cups. I came across the recipe while perusing Treehugger. Be sure to check out their site, tons of interesting projects and reading.

          Fall Vegetable Risotto
It's now 7:26, Winston, my 5 year old Shih Tsu is alseep to my left and Capone is drifting off to my right. Harley, our Cockatiel is playing Peek-A-Boo on my knee and Home Alone just ended. I am off to clean my kitchen and toss my freshly laundered sheets into the dryer. Next post, I'll be sure to share the homemade laundry detergent recipe I use.

Wishing you all a Merry Xmas Eve, Eve.

          Bye for now, Babel.
